Water Quality

Safe, high-quality drinking water for our region.

We’re committed to providing customers with high-quality drinking water that meets the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Regulations and our Customer Charter.

We monitor water quality at every stage of the treatment process and its supply to customers, with around 30,000 samples tested each year.

While we produce high-quality water, there might be occasions when customers experience a change in the water’s taste or smell, which is harmless. The cause may be:

  • a change in the level of chlorine used to disinfect the water
  • a change in the source of the water supplied
  • an issue with the customer’s plumbing
  • the customer moving from one area to another.

We are required by law to disinfect all drinking water supplies to ensure that they contain no harmful bacteria. Adding chlorine in small, controlled amounts, is a very effective way to disinfect the water all the way to the tap.

An easy way to reduce or remove the taste or smell of chlorine is to place a jug of water in the fridge to cool before drinking.

Taste and smell are difficult to measure, as some people have a greater sensitivity than others. However, if you notice a taste or smell for the first time, or it is stronger than usual and you are concerned contact us on 1800 671 841 for advice.
